Registering A Good Domain Name

A good Domain Name can help in several ways. It can help increase your Search Engine Ranking, getting your site listed higher on Google and Yahoo. It can also help people remember and find your site.

Picking the best domain name for your site is critical. Many folks get their domain name before opening their hosting account. That's fine with us, we don't sell them, anyhow. We believe there is just one place on the Internet to buy a Domain - GoDaddy!

We buy all of ours there, and suggest that you do also. We do not recommend any of their other services, but for registering a domain, they can't be beat.

SSL Certificates

The certificate is proof that the secure section (usually payment pages) is really owned by who claims to own it and that the owner has been verified and found of good character.

If you are using PayPal, or one of the other "third party" processors, or if you have a Merchant Account / Gateway method of taking payments, in most cases the actual payment transactions that require the SSL are taking part on their site, not yours. When your customer gets into the actual checkout process, everything moves to your payment processor's Secure Website. So, you have no real need of an SSL Certificate.

You would need your own SSL Certificate are when you are collecting someone's credit card or checking account information for your own use, by entering sales data in a conventional (card swiper type) or virtual terminal that you have collected on the net. We should point out that this practice is in violation of card issuer rules and could result in you losing the right to accept credit cards!

Or, where you are collecting other personal or private information that should not be shared by email or other insecure methods, such as possibly medical or financial information.

However, even though not required to have an SSL Certificate, many online sellers feel that having one, and being able to display a logo stating that they do have one is well worth the cost of the certificate.

Dedicated IP Addresses

In general, your hosting account, as well as your account with your Internet Service Provider, is a Shared IP. This means that a number of others are on the same server with you, sharing the basic Internet Address. This is common practice that holds down costs for everyone.

There is one downside to this. Websites track who visits the sites by the IP address of the visitor. Your account with us will have that capability. The downside comes if you should happen to share an IP with someone who is accused of spamming, or other unlawful activity. This can result in either the IP being avoided by some search engines, or being shut down completely. It does not happen often, but there is that possibility.

And since the purpose of an SSL Certificate is to verify the details about a specific website, it must not be on a shared IP, but must have a Dedicated IP Address of it's very own.
